AGRO
The Freetown of Christiania, a legal squatter’s settlement established in 1978 on historic military grounds in central Copenhagen, is known for it’s “hippie” culture, quirky self-built homes, and undeveloped natural landscape. It is currently home to about 1,000 residents who strive to uphold the values and goals the community set for itself in the 70’s - including autonomy, environmental sustainability, and free expression of creativity. AGRO showcases how agriculture can provide an excellent means of self-sustainability and economic stability for Christiania as it faces the pressures of urban development and rising sea levels, without compromising the values or character of the community.
